How to Cook Crabs

So, you have decided to just have us deliver your live bushel of NC Blue Crabs. Here is how to cook them the fisherman's way: Place the crabs in a steam basket and place in a large pot with about 2 inches of boiling water. For added flavor, add about a cup (or more!) of vinegar or beer, and season with Old Bay to taste.

Fisherman's tip, be patient and get that water hot before you put the crabs in. Cook on high for roughly 20 minutes. Check periodically until shell is easily cracked and a deep red color. You can also re-heat previously steamed blue crab in the microwave. Place a damp paper towel over them to keep them moist, and cook on high for 1 to 2 minutes. They can also be warmed in the oven for approximately 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Dip in melted butter, use the meat for dips and other dishes or just enjoy the pure crab!

How many Bushels do you need?

So now, how many bushels do you need? If steamed crabs will be served along with other food, we suggest about six crabs per person. If you will be eating crabs solely as your main course, then you can plan for approximately eight to a dozen crabs per person. Generally, a bushel of crabs can feed about eight people.

* Please keep in mind that these numbers are "approximate" and are intended to help you determine a ballpark number of crabs to order.

If your family LOVES CRABS then you already know! It is better to have left over crabs than to be left wanting more!
